Devonport High School for Girls

National Scientific Thinking Challenge

Congratulations to our Year 10 students who showcased their scientific prowess in the 2024 National Scientific Thinking Challenge, achieving 15 Gold, 14 Silver, and 11 Bronze awards, placing students in the top 10%, 25%, and 40% of the national competition. These accomplishments are a testament to the dedication and hard work of both our students and the Science Faculty in reinforcing the importance of scientific inquiry and critical thinking.

This is the first time DHSG has taken part in the challenge, facilitated by volunteers at six different university Chemistry Departments: Warwick, Southampton, Bristol, Newcastle, Manchester, and Oxford Universities. This online competition tested the students' ability to apply their scientific knowledge and understanding to a diverse range of contexts, models, and phenomena, including worldwide smartphone mobile network subscriptions, hot air balloons, malaria, the non-profit organisation Ocean Cleanup based in the Netherlands, working to rid the world’s oceans of plastic, snow blower engines, cement, astronomy, and WASP telescopes searching for planets outside our solar system.
